Research & Initiatives

This project follow the path of three major steps:

  1.  Identification of key parameters during the 3D printing activation process

  2. Adaptation and use of bio-based construction materials using particle-bed 3D printing

  3.  Validate the concept on a BREATHE block made of bio-based materials.

We work on identifying and tayloring the  key parameters during the 3D printing                                                             activation process. This step defines the best parameters requiered by the powder                                                              and the fluid injected to understand the processus of the fluid imbibition and adapt the 3D printing process.

Several methods have been developped to study the imbibition phenomena. We mainly cary out experimental studies and also numerical modelling which are a precious help to deeply understand some phenomena.

Adapting and using bio-based construction materials with a particle-bed 3D printer is the second step. Selecting hemp particles is tricky as the cellulose from the hemp disturb the cement hydration. We are trying to solve this thanks to the particle bed 3D printing method. The influence of water dealing with hemp is also studied using MEB microscopy and IR spectroscopy.

The last step is to validate the concept on a BREATHE block made of  bio-based materials. Validation will consist mostly on the quality control of the mechanical and thermal performance of the blocks.
